Can wisdom teeth hurt without needing them removed?

I was wondering, is it alright for the area where your wisdom teeth are growing to hurt a little without needing them removed or is it necessary/better to get them removed at the first sense of pain?

Can wisdom teeth hurt without needing them removed?
yes they can hurt without needing to be removed.

Wisdom tooth Pain is usually caused by 3 things:

1. you can't/don't clean under the gums properly and it becomes all irritated.

2. Its decayed

3. it's crooked and rubbing on your cheek or you bite on the opposing gum.

Most dentists will push you to get them out though sometimes unnececarily. They may say they cause crowding. or that your jaw isn't big enough. In the end its up to you whether you want them out. They probably won't fully erupt until you're 20-25 if at all.

You should get an xray of your jaw to see if the wisdom teeth are coming up straight. If they are you may be ok.

If they are not coming up straight and they are beneath the gum and will never come up because they are tilted at an angle, then you may never need them out because they will not cause pain, and you don't have to clean them so leave them there.

Wisdom teeth only need to be extracted if they are: painful all the time; crooked and rubbing on your cheek; you can't clean it properly; decayed or causing a food to trap behind the 2nd molar and making the 2nd molar decayed.

The evidence is contraversial whether wisdom teeth cause crowding of your other teeth. People still get crowding with no wisdom teeth so crowding is influenced more by other factors. Crowding is a product of genetics, changing jaw shape with age, and slippery teeth at the front (that is another story though)

Basically if its only poking through a little bit and you can keep it clean enough to stop it decaying or getting irritated gums, then you may be able to leave it even if it doesn't come all the way through.
Reply:YES
Reply:I still have mine and they are growing and GAWD IT HURTS!!!!! its up to your dentist to tell ya really. most of the time its best to have them removed.
Reply:It is possible that the pain is due to normal eruption and then they will not have to be removed. An X-ray should be taken to evaluate them.
Reply:you should have them removed because they could be messing up your other teeth by causing too much pressure on them
Reply:Mine sure did. they would swell up hurt like mad then settle down again, then they would swell up again, even breaking skin sometimes. This went on for years. One of them became infected before they even came through so I had them both surgically removed. Good luck!
Reply:its better to hv them removed... since you won't need it to chew, they're only there to increase ur chances of getting cavaties or crowding your other teeth.

i suggest you have them removed.. it doesn't hurt anyway!
Reply:Yes. It's natural for teeth to hurt a little when they come in. (Babies teethe, remember?) Your other teeth will be pushed closer together to make room for the new ones, which can also be moderately painful. If the pain is more than "moderate", you may have a problem (sometimes there's just not enough room in your mouth for new teeth!) and a dentist can tell you if your wisdom teeth should be removed. All my wisdom teeth grew in without problems and without being removed.
Reply:i would have them removed! i got mine out as soon as i felt the pain! i had mine out a few months ago....dont get me wrong the pain after is horrible but after the fact they will give you no problems!!
Reply:i was in pain for about a month before i got my wisdom teeth pulled. they hurt the most when they come in, but there is no use for them and its best to have them removed. they will hurt for quite awhile, and you might bite your inner mouth and your tongue because thats what happened to me
Reply:I'm just writing as a dentist to say that I agree 100% with Bouncing Molar.

Not all wisdom teeth need to be removed, but they often hurt when they are coming in. It's called "teething pain."
Reply:I had a fair bit of pain when my wisdom teeth were coming up and they are now fine and I have room for them. However, it wouldn't hurt to have them looked at to make sure. I had x-rays taken which showed they were fine (that was 12 years ago)
